If you've seen other films by Jacques Rivette, you might wonder, just as I do, what this Victorian novel adaptation was all about. If you've seen other films by this unique directorthis mid-eighties try just doesn't fit.Take the 1974 masterpiece “Celine and Julie” for comparison. In it, two very open-minded young women(both practitioners of different kinds of “magic”)get tangled in a mysterious old-fashioned love triangle story, taking place in a archetypal haunted(Victorian)house. When they figure out that the 10-year old daughter of the house-owner is going to get murdered out of love madness, they decide to sneak into the house and rescue her.The thing is, you know from the beginning that the pathetic melodrama in the haunted house is not real in the sense that Celine and Julie are. It's rather they invented the whole story just to kill time & have some fun with out-dated storytelling. It's essentially a illustration of what is called “deconstruction”.The melodrama just serves as something that can be manipulated or even laughed at.Rivette(respectively, Celine and Julie)play very freely with a kind of narrative that doesn't seem to work anymore.Unfortunately, “Hurlevent” has just the feeling of the haunted house sequences of the earlier movie-and that means, the characters are not likable, seem like marionettes, bloodless, dull.It completely lacks the light-hearted(though very intellectual)sophistication that made “Celine and Julie” so enjoyable.Maybe Rivette wanted it just like that.Even if this is so, it doesn't make sense for me.

也从凯瑟琳暴虐失意的哥哥手中,取得合法的山庄产权。始终没人知道他消失的这几年去了哪里、他像个王子般返回山庄、识字、懂得看财务表。他的生存是为了报复、为了爱;

Earnshaw’s own children, Catherine and Hindley.Heathcliff is bullied by Hindley after Earnshaw death and his lover Catherine marries Edgar Linton for many factors. This made Heathcliff mad, his destructive force is unleashed and his first victim is his beloved, Catherine, who dies giving birth to a girl, another Catherine(Kathy).Edgar’s sister, whom he had married, flees to the south.Their son Linton and Kathy are married, but always sickly Linton dies. After that, Hareton, Hindley’s son and the young widow fall in love.Increasingly

Published in 1847, WUTHERING HEIGHTS was not well received by the reading public, many of whom condemned it as sordid, vulgar, and unnatural--and author Emily Bronte went to her grave in 1848 believing that her only novel was a failure. It was not until 1850, when WUTHERING HEIGHTS received a second printing with an introduction by Emily's sister Charlotte, that it attracted a wide readership. And from that point the reputation of the book has never looked back.Today it is widely recognized as one of the great novels of English literature.Even so, WUTHERING HEIGHTS continues to pide readers. It is not a pretty love story;rather, it is swirling tale of largely unlikeable people caught up in obsessive love that turns to dark madness. It is cruel, violent, dark and brooding, and many people find it extremely unpleasant. And yet--it possesses a grandeur of language and design, a sense of tremendous pity and great loss that sets it apart from virtually every other novel written. The novel is told in the form of an extended flashback. After a visit to his strange landlord, a newcomer to the area desires to know the history of the family--which he receives from Nelly Deans, a servant who introduces us to the Earnshaw family who once resided in the house known as Wuthering Heights. It was once a cheerful place, but Old Earnshaw adopted a Gipsy child who he named Heathcliff. And Catherine, daughter of the house, found in him the perfect companion wild, rude, and as proud and cruel as she.But although Catherine loves him, even recognizes him as her soulmate, she cannot lower herself to marry so far below her social station. She instead marries another, and in so doing sets in motion an obsession that will destroy them all.WUTHERING HEIGHTS is a bit difficult to get into;the opening chapters are so dark in their portrait of the end result of this obsessive love that they are somewhat off-putting.But they feed into the flow of the work in a remarkable way, setting the stage for one of the most remarkable structures in all of literature, a story that circles upon itself in a series of repetitions as it plays out across two generations.Catherine and Heathcliff are equally remarkable, both vicious and cruel, and yet never able to shed their impossible love no matter how brutally one may wound the other. As the novel coils further into alcoholism, seduction, and one of the most elaborately imagined plans of revenge it gathers into a ghostly tone Heathcliff, driven to madness by a woman who is not there but who seems reflected in every part of his world--dragging her corpse from the grave, hearing her calling to him from the moors, escalating his brutality not for the sake of brutality but so that her memory will never fade, so that she may never leave his mind until death itself.Yes, this is madness, insanity, and there is no peace this side of the grave or even beyond. It is a stunning novel, frightening, inexorable, unsettling, filled with unbridled passion that makes one cringe.Even if you do not like it, you should read it at least once--and those who do like it will return to it again and again

The book report of Wuthering Heights Wuthering Heights was not well received by the reading public, many of whom condemned it as sordid, vulgar, and unnatural--and author Emily Bronte went to her grave in 1848 believing that her only novel was a failure. It was not until 1850, when Wuthering Heights received a second printing with an introduction by Emily's sister Charlotte, that it attracted a wide readership. And from that point the reputation of the book has never looked back.Today it is widely recognized as one of the great novels of English literature.I will introduce the author firstly.Emily Bronte, a British writer, Charlotte Bronte's sister, Anne Bronte's elder sister, was born in a poor family of the pastor. She was in poor living conditions, studying in a boarding school. And also once went to Belgium learning French, German and French literature with elder sister, preparing to establish a school in the future, but not succeed.Emily was introverted, elegant. She was fond of writing poetry from childhood. In 1846, they published a book of poems at their own expense.Wuthering Heights is her only novel, published in December 1847.The three sisters’ three novels, Charlotte's Jane Eyre, Emily’s Wuthering Heights and little sister Annie's Edgar nice graham were published in the same year.In addition to Wuthering Heights, Emily also produced 193 poems. She was considered as a British genius writer. After reading the masterpiece, Wuthering Heights, gave me a kind of depression and made me unable to understand what love on earth is.I think all the people in this novel are pathetic.Somebody even is lamentable.Everyone who read this novel would be moved.Wuthering Heights is a story of love and revenge. It is the typical gothic novel. The story is narrated by Lockwood, a gentleman visiting the Yorkshire moors where the novel is set, and of Mrs.Dean, housekeeper to the Earnshaw family, who had been witness of the interlocked destinies of the original owners of the Heights. In a series of flashbacks and time shifts, Brontë draws a powerful picture of the enigmatic Heathcliff, who is brought to Heights from the streets of Liverpool by Mr.Earnshaw.Heathcliff is treated as Earnshaw's own children, Catherine and Hindley. After his death Heathcliff is bullied by Hindley, who loves Catherine, but she marries Edgar Linton.Heathcliff’s destructive force is unleashed, and his first victim is Catherine, who dies giving birth to a girl, another Catherine.Isabella Linton, Edgar's sister, whom he had married, flees to the south.Their son Linton and Catherine are married, but always sickly Linton dies.Hareton, Hindley's son, and the young widow became close.Increasingly isolated and alienated from daily life, Heathcliff experiences visions, and he longs for the death that will reunite him with Catherine. In the novel, the author's put all her efforts on the characterizations of Heathcliff. In it she placed all her indignation, sympathy and ideal. This outcast who is deprived of man’s warm in the actual life has been trained to have a strong love and hate.Hindley’s whip makes him get a taste of the cruel life, and also teaches him how to weak-spiritedly yield the fate of unchangeable shame. He chooses to resist.Catherine was his faithful partner. They developed the true love in common resistance. However, Catherine finally betrays heathcliff, and married Edgar Linton she doesn't know and love. The reasons causing the love tragedy are her vanity, ignorance and stupid. Finally she looses her youth, love and life, and also destroys heathcliff who always madly loves her and almost hurts next generation.Catherine’s betrayal and the wretched fate after married are the most important turning point in this novel. It makes heathcliff’s full of love become matchless hate.Catherine’s death makes heathcliff’s hate burst out, and becomes the crazy revenge power.Heathcliff’s purpose has been achieved. He not only makes Hindley and Edgar die miserably, dominate exclusively two manors, but also let their next innocent generation suffer the consequences. This crazy revenge is seemed to be against the convention, but incisively and vividly expresses his extraordinary spirit of rebelliousness. This kind of special revolt is determined by the special environment and special character.Heathcliff’s tragedy of love is the tragedy of social, and also is the tragedy of the time.Wuthering Heights is not so easy to get into, because the description of the environment and the character, the portrait of this obsessive love are so dark and somewhat off-putting.But in this novel there is a remarkable way setting the stage for one of the most remarkable structures. And these structures circle upon itself in a series of repetitions as it plays out across two generations.Besides, the description of wasteland in the novel gave more impression for readers.Wasteland gives Wuthering Heights rare vigor, charm, mysterious and full of passion.Wuthering Heights explores the philosophy of humanity. The characters in the novel are full of boldness, wildness and passion which are the human nature and instinct that free from restriction of social civilization. In this novel, passion is the key to bring the readers into the story, it does not matter of good and evil, beauty and ugliness, it’s a real existence for us to experience and think. The end of the novel was that Heathcliff committed suicide. His death is a die for their love, and expresses his undying love for Catherine. Before he died, he gave up the revenge of the next generation. This reflects that he actually has a good nature, but the cruel reality makes him lose his nature. The recovery of humanity is a spiritual sublimation and reflects the humanitarian ideals. This novel also reflects what kind of social background the author suffered. With the development of economy in capital society, it is important behaviors that have stood the test of the temptation.
