一.口译历史

The Development of Interpretation 一种语言文字所表达的意义经由另一种语言文字转达出来叫做翻译。翻译主要有口译和笔译两种形式。口译属翻译学科(translatology)，系翻译的种口头表达形式。

口译可以是两种标准语之间的翻译，也可以是一种标准语与一种方言之间的翻译，或者是两种方言之间的翻译。本书所讲的口译属两种不同的民族共同语之间的翻译，即汉语与英语之间的翻译。

口译活动出现于文字问世之前，远远于笔译而成为不同民族之间交流的一种形式。公元前1900年，亚述人(Assyrians)和巴比伦人(Babylonians)所用闪米特语（Semitic)下属语Akkadian中有一词targumanu，指的就是从事口译工作的人。英语单词interpreter源自拉丁语interpres，意指在人与人之间从事“阐朋”或“释意”工作的“中间人”(middleman)、“中介者”（intermediary)或“中间商”(commercial go-between)0

口译历史源远流长，可追溯到人类社会的早期。在漫长的人类原始社会，原始部落群体的经济和文化活动属一种各自为政的区域活动。随着历史的发展，这种自我封闭的社会形态显然阻碍了人类经济活动和文化活动的进一步发展，于是部落群体便产生了跨越疆域、向外发展的愿望，产生了同操不同语言的民族进行贸易和文化交流的需要。语 言不通显然成了影响这种跨民族交流的最大障碍，而口译作为语言媒介可以使人们与外界进行经济和文化交往的愿望得以成为现实。于是，作为人类跨文化、跨民族交际活动的桥梁——双语种口译或多语种口译便应运而生。

在人类社会的发展史上，口译活动成了推动社会车轮滚动的润滑剂。人类的口译活动忠实地记录了千百年来世界各族人民在政治、经济、军事、文化、科技、卫生、教育、法律等领域里的交往活动。古代社会东西方文明成果的交流，佛教、基督教、儒教和伊斯兰教的传播，文成公主婚嫁西域，马可•波罗东游华夏，哥伦布发现新大陆，郑和下西洋，鉴真东渡扶桑；近、现代社会西方世界与中国之间在政治、军事、经济、文 化诸方面的风风雨雨，两次世界大战的爆发与结束，联合国的建立与发展，世贸组织的形成与活动，当代中国的全方位对外开放，信息时代经济全球化的浪潮，欧元区的形成，亚太经合组织的创建，欧亚峰会的召开，上海合作组织的成立„„人类历史上的大事记无不烙有口译的印记。显然，在人类跨文化交往中，口译起了催化剂的作用。

口译作为一种职业在我国已有两千多年的历史。古时，从事口译

一职业的人被称之为“译”、“寄”、“象”、“狄鞮”、“舌人”、“象胥”、“通事”、“通译”、“重舌”或“九译令”。《礼计•王制沖记载：“五方之民，言语不通，嗜欲不同。达其志，通其欲，东方曰寄，南方曰象，西方曰狄鞮，北方曰译。”《国语•周》对译员作了这样的解注:“舌人，能达异方之志，象胥之职也。”《癸幸杂识后集•译者》也作出了明确的解释：“译，陈也；陈说内外之言皆立此传语之人以通其志，今北方谓之通事。”《后汉书•和帝纪》提到了译员的作用：“都护西指，则通译四万。”《东京赋》赞颂了译员的能力：“重舌之人九译。” 数百年来西方各国虽然也有专司口译之职的人员，但是译员大多属临时的兼职人员。口译在国际上被认定为一种职业始于20世纪初。第一次世界大战结束后的1919年，“巴黎和会”的组织者招募了一大批专职译员，他们以正式译员的身份为“巴黎和会”作“接续翻译”(又被称为“连续翻译”或“交传”)。“巴黎和会”结束后，这批译员中的不少杰出人士陆续成了欧洲诸多翻译学院和翻译机构的创始人。口译的职业性自此得到了认可，专业译员的培养开始受到重视。

1927年举行的“日内瓦国际劳工组织会议”首次使用了“同声传译”的模式，即一种原语和译语近乎同步不间断地出现的传译方法。第二次世界大战结束后举行的纽伦堡战犯审判(1945年一1946年)将“同声传译”列为口译工作的主要模式。以“同声传译”为标志的口译形式的出现,使人们对高级口译的职业独特性刮目相看。随着联合国的创立，随着全球性和地区性组织的不断成立，国与国之间、地区与地区之间的交往日趋频繁，国际多边舞台和双边舞台上演出了一幕幕活生生的现代剧目，口译人员在这些剧目中扮演了独特的角色。职业会议译员的地位越来越高，联合国成立了专门的翻译机构，职业译员组织如“国际会议译员协会”(AIIC)于1953年在日内瓦宣告成立。半个世纪以来，高级口译人才一直受到各国政府、各类国际机构和组织的青睐。专业口译已成为一种备受尊敬的高尚职业。尤其是高级国际会议译员，他们既是聪慧的语言工作者，也是博学的国际外交家。

与此同时，口译作为一门学科进入了高等学府。瑞士的日内瓦口译大学率先于1940年成立，奧地利的维也纳口译学校于1943年成立，美国的乔治敦大学口笔译部于1949年成立，法国的巴黎高翻学院于1957年成立，英国的威斯敏斯特高翻学院于1965年成立；瑞士的苏黎世高翻学院于1967年成立，美国的蒙特雷高翻学院于1968年成立„„在我国也有越来越多的培养高级翻译人才的教育机构出现，北京、上海、广州、厦门、西安、重庆、香港、澳门、台湾等地的高校纷纷成立了翻译院系。

新中国成立以来的半个多世纪里，我国在国际舞台上日趋活跃，在世界政治、经济、贸易、文化、体育等领域里发挥着越来越重要的作用，这使优秀口译人员成了国家的紧缺人才。20世纪70年代初，中国重返联合国，国际地位自此快速上升。70年代末、80年代初，我国沿海地区推行改革开放的政策，经济开始腾飞，国门也因而越开越大。而后全面开放的中囯步入了经济加速发展的快车道。即使在许多国家和地区经济陷于衰退的90年代，我国的经济列车仍以其强劲的活力，在通向世界经济发达国家之列的轨道上继续高速运行。义无反顾地选择了社会主义市场经济并已取得巨大成功的中国，成了许多海外投资者的首选目标。以稳健的步伐走强国之路的中国，对外交流的接触点越来越多，接触面越来越大。各类口译人才的需求与日俱增，高级译员的供需矛盾越来越突出。

历史的车轮已把我们带入了一个崭新的世纪。这是我国全面振兴的世纪，重铸辉煌的世纪，是中华文化同世界各族文化广泛交流、共同繁荣的世纪，同时也是口译职业的黄金时代。这些年来，我国同世界各国开展了全方位、多层次的交流，让我们更好地了解世界，也让世界更好地了解我们。涉外领域的口译工作者作为中外交往的一支必不可缺的中介(也是中坚力量），肩负着历史的重任。今日中国比以往任何时期更需要一大批合格的专业译员和兼职译员来共同构筑与加固对外交往的桥梁。

当然，我国翻译界也比以往任何时期更重视对口译理论、口译实践、口译人才培养等进行科学系统的研究。厦门、广州、北京、上海等地的一些高校纷纷举办了全国性乃至国际性的口译学术研讨会。“上海市外语口译资格证书考试”、“全国翻译专业资格(水平)考试”、“全国外语翻译资格证书考试”等权威认证考试应运而生。全国各高校的英语本科专业都将口译课列为学生的必修课程。“口译研究与实践”作为一门理论与实践相结合的课程已被越来越多的高校列入了硕士研究生的教学大纲。过去两年，教育部先后批准了若干所大学试办翻译学硕士专业和翻译学本科专业。这是时代的需要、国家的需要、市场的需要。专业化的口译教学可以为国家和地方培养一大批高水准的紧缺人才，而高校学者所从事的口译理论研究的成果也可为丰富应用语言学理论、跨文化交际学理论等作出贡献。| The Def^g四 of Interpretation！

口译隶属翻译的范畴，翻译含笔译和口译两大类，可指笔译，也可 表示口译。“我们有些资料要翻译”，指的是笔译工作广我们有个会议 要翻译”，指的是口译工作。笔译有笔译的职业要求，口译自然也有口 译的职业标准。笔译有反映笔译特点的定义，口译也有体现口译特征 的定义。

口译的定义似乎很简单，“口译、口译，口头翻译者是也”。因此口 译似乎可被定义为“用口头表达的方式进行翻译”。那么何谓“翻译”？ “翻译、翻译，翻转解译者是也”。其实不然，无论口译还是笔译，都必须

解决“两个标准”的问题。第一个标准是形式上的转换标准，第二个问 题是内容上的解意标准。定义蕴涵标准，定义若已确立，标准则立于 其间。

那么什么是口译？口译是一种通过口头表达形式，将所感知和理 解的信息准确而又快速地由一种语言形式转换成另一种语言形式，进而达到完整并即时传递与交流信息之目的的交际行为，是现代社会跨文化、跨民族交往的一种基本沟通方式。“形变”而“意存”，“形转”而 “意达”，是口译的基本要求；“意及”而又“神似”，“意传”而又“迅达”是口译的职业标准。

表面上看，口译似乎是一种被动、单

一、机械的语言传达活动。其 实不然，口译是一种积极的、复杂的、具有一定创造性的意义再现活动。口译所再现的话语意义不仅仅是简单的言内意义，还涉及信息内容所包含的言外含义、话语风格、文化特征、言者精神。从这个意义上说，口译是一种集语言信息、语境信息、文化信息、心理信息等于一体的综合交际活动。

从事上述口译工作的人叫做译员。在相当长的时期里以口译为职业的人叫做职业译员。除了职业译员外，还有一些人可称为兼职译员和自由人译员。自由人译员以承接口译任务为基本职业，他们可能有固定的服务对象，但不从属于任何一个正式的翻译机构。偶尔做些简单的、应急性的口译工作的人不是通常意义上的译员。

译员必须是掌握两种语言(或两种以上语言)的语言知识和语言能力的双语人。但是，一个能说两种语言的双语人不经训练未必能成为一名称职的译员。这就是说，译员的前提是双语人，而双语人不等同于译员。这好比说，一个本族语为英语的人并非自然而然是一名英语教师，未必能够称职地向母语为非英语的人士传授英语语言知识。又譬如说，发音器官无障碍的人都会唱歌，但一个发音器官正常的人不一定是一个歌手。口译所需的双语知识和双语能力仅仅是口译的语言基础。口译依赖双语符号系统的有效转换以传递信息，保持交际双方信息渠道的畅通。两种语言符号系统之间存在着种种非对等性，一个能流利地讲两种语言的人即便具备一定的双语转换知识和技巧也不够，因语言符号的有效转换不仅涉及一个人的语言知识，还涉及这个人的 语言解意能力、反应记忆能力、信息组合能力、语言表达能力以及文化 背景知识。具有双语能力的人可以通过系统学习、强化训练，较好地掌 握口译知识和技能，成为一名合格的职业译员。

三、口译的特点 The Characteristics of Interpretation 口译是一项很特殊的语言交际活动。说其特殊是因为口头翻译工 作有一些突出的特点。

首先，口译是一种具有不可预测性的即席双语传言活动。口译人 员需要在准备有限的情况下，即刻进入双语语码切换状态，进行现时现 场的口译操作。有些口译场合，如记者招待会和商务谈判，口译话题千 变万化，往往难以预测。译员或许可以通过事先确定的交谈主题来预 测交谈各方的话题。但是，译员的任何估计都不可能是充分的，而且主 观预测也是靠不住的，甚至是危险的。此外，交际各方都希望能连贯表 达自己的思想，并能迅速传递给对方。但是在语言不同的交际双方之 间介入了一个传言人，在一定程度上影响了信息表达的连贯性和接收 的快捷性。正因如此，交际双方都希望作为交际中介的译员不要过多 地占用他们的交谈时间，尽可能地做到捷达高效。这就要求译员具有 高超的即席应变能力和流利的现时表达能力。现场气氛的压力是口译工作的另一特点。口译场面有时非常严肃 庄重，如国际会议和外交谈判。正式场合的严肃气氛会给经验不足的 译员造成较.大的心理压力，紧张的情绪会影响译员的自信，怯场的心态 会使译员口误频生。瞬息万变的现场气氛会使译员反应迟钝，从而影响口译水平的正常发挥。一般说来，译员的翻译行为不可有意掩饰或 调和现场气氛。如实反映口译现场的气氛和主题是口译的基本职业规 范。交际现场气氛无论是热烈的，还是沉闷的，无论是严肃的，还是随 和的，都不应该因译员不恰当的过滤而受到损失。译员的口译精神不

可超脱现场气氛，更不应该凌驾于现场气氛之上。译员的口译神态应 该是如实反映场景气氛的一面镜子。

口译的另一特征是个体性操作，译责重大。译员属单打一的个体 工作者，其劳动具有很强的独立操作性。通常，译员在整个口译过程中 基本上是孤立无援的。译员必须随时独立处理可能碰到的任何问题。有些问题属语言类，与译员的双语知识有关；有些属文化传统类，与译 员的民族知识有关；有些属自然科学类，与译员的学科知识有关；更多 的属社会科学类，与译员的社会、文化、国情、时事等方面的基本知识有 关。译员无法回避面临的任何一个问题，无路可退，只有正视每一道难 题，及时处理每一道难题。在口译过程中，译员不可能查询工具书或有 关参考资料，也不能频频打断说话者，要求对方重复自己所讲的内容，解释其中的难点。作为个体劳动者，译员要对自己的口译负责，不可胡 编乱造，信口雌黄，自我得意；不可“自圆其说”，瞎猜乱凑，以期歪打正 着；不可“你说你的，我译我的”，两条铁轨，永不相交。译员应该认识 到，“译(一）语既出，驷马难追”。自己的译语，字字句句，重如千金，随 意不得。有些场合口译出错，还可期望在以后起草书面协议时予以纠 正。然而许多口译，如国际会议口译，没有后道工序的补救机会。对于 口译，所谓的“译责自负”原则没有多大意义。译员自知“译责”重大，只 是在重要口译场合铸成大错，恐怕自己想“负”此责，也“负”不了。

口译是一种综合运用视、听、说、写、读等知识和技能的语言操作活 动。“视”是指译员须具有观察捕捉说话者的脸部表情、手势体姿、情绪 变化等非语言因素的能力。“听”是指译员能够耳听会意各种带地方口 音以及不同语速的话语的能力。“说”是指译员能用母吾和外语进行流 利而达意地表达的能力。“写”是指译员在口译过程中能进行快速笔记 的能力。“读”是指译员在视译时能进行快速阅读和理解的能力。口译 属一种立体式、交叉型的信息传播方式。多层次的信息来源和传播渠 道，既给口译工作带来了一定的困难(如说话者浓重的地方口音和过快 的语速给译员带来的耳听会意的困难），同时又为口译工作创造了颇为 有利的条件：如说话者抑扬顿^^的语音语调、生动直观的体语表现、现 场各种与口译内容有关的景物(如旅游景点和博物馆的实景实物），所 有这一切都是辅助口译的有利条件。

交流的信息内容包罗万象，是口译的又一特点。职业译员的口译 范围没有限界,内容可以上至天文，下及地理，无所不涉，无所不包。毋 庸置疑，口译是一门专业性很强的职业，口译要求译员有扎实的语言知 识功底、流利的双语表达能力和娴熟的转译技能。口译要求译员成为 一名语言专家和交际能手，这非一日之功。然而，这些仅仅构成译员的 语言基本功。由于口译的服务对象是各界人士，他们来自各个阶层、各 行各业，有着不同的教育背景和文化背景，在交际过程中他们会有意或 无意地将自己所熟悉的专业知识表达出来，这是译员无法回避的现实。当然，无人能够精通百家，博晓万事，无人能说自己天文地理、古今中 外，无所不知，无所不晓。但是，口译内容繁杂无限却是不争的事实。

1坐在翻译席上的译员，自然而然地被视为既是一名精通语言的专家，同 时又是一名通晓百事的杂家。

四、口译标准

The Criteria of Interpretation

衡量口译优劣有两条基本标准：一是准确，二是流利。自从严复提出了“信”、“达”、“雅”翻译三标准之后，翻译界尽管对 “信”、“达”、“雅”的解释各有不同，但是大部分学者对这些标淮所持的 态度是肯定的。翻译能做到“信”、“达”、“雅”固然不错，问题在于翻译 不是照相业的复制行当，难以做到“信”、“达”、“雅”三全。基于不同文 化的各族语言在翻译过程中难保原汁、原味、原形、原貌，因而“信”、“达”、“雅”只能是相对的。有时“信”虽然达标，而“达”和“雅”却有所不 达，有所不雅。于是使出现了“信”、“达”、“雅”三标准之主从关系的争 论。时至今日，争论仍在延续，焦点无非集中在翻译究竟应以“直译”还 是“意译”为本。

其实，“信”、“达”、“雅”作为衡量笔译作品质量之优劣的三条标准，是一个互为依存、缺一不可的整体，片面强调“直译”或“意译”的孰主孰

辅是无意义的。一篇上乘的笔头译文从内容到形式都应忠实反映原文 的内容和形式，都应被译文的目标读者所感知和理解。对译文的内容、精神和风格不可顾此失彼，应该基本做到“信”、“达”、“雅”。任何刻意 的直译或意译行为，单方面地求“信”、“达”、“雅”中的某条标准，严格说 来都不是真正意义上的翻译，而是“改译”或“编译”。

至于口译的标准，套用笔译的"信”、“达”、“雅”三原则是恰当的。口译不同于笔译，口译的“现时”、“现场”、“限时”的特点决定了 口译的 标准有别于笔译的标准。衡量口译质量的基本标准应该是“准确”和 “流利”。首先，口译必须“准确”。不准确的口译可能是“胡译”，可能是“篡 译”，也可能是“误译”，是不能容忍的。准确是口译的灵魂，是口译的生 命线。准确要求译员将来源语这一方的信息完整无误地传达给目标语 的那一方。具体说来，口译的准确涉及口译时的主题准确、精神准确、论点准确、风格准确、词语准确、数字准确、表达准确、语速准确以及口 吻准确等方面。归根结底，准确的译语应该同时保持原语的意义和风 格。准确的口译不仅是双语交际成功的保障，也是译员职业道德和专 业水平的集中体现。准确的口译不仅体现了译员对交际活动的尊重和 负责，也体现了译员对交际双方的尊重和负责。必须指出，我们所讲 的准确性并非是那种机械刻板的“模压式”口译或“盖章式”口译。例 如，对原语者明显的口吃，不可妄加模仿。如法炮制说话人的语疾不 是忠实翻译，而是人身侮辱。对交际一方过快或过慢的语速、明显的 口误或浓重的口音，译员也不可模压炮制、鹦鹉学舌般地如数传递给 另一方。

“流利”是译员必须遵循的另一大标准。译员在确保“准确”口译 的前提下，应该迅速流畅地将一方的信息传译给另一方。如果说“准 确”也是笔译的基本要求，那么“流利”则充分体现了 口译的特点。口 译的现场性、现时性、即席性、限时性、交互性等因素要求口译过程宜 短不宜长，节奏宜紧不宜松。口译是交际的工具，工具的价值在于效 用和效率。工具首先得有效用，否则就不成其为工具，但有效用而无 效率(或低效率)的工具决不是好工具。那么，如何来衡量口译的流

利程度呢？口译的流利程度包括译员对来源语信息的感知速度和解 析速度，及其用目标语进行编码和表达的速度。通常，口译时译员对 母语信息的感知速度和解析速度快于对外语信息的感知速度和解析 速度，同时用母语编码和表达的速度也快于用外语编码和表达的速 度。在口译场合，译员对信息的感知和解析受到“现时”、“限刻”的制 约，无法“自由自在”地调节速度，所以必须同步加工。而在编码和表 达阶段，译员可以控制速度，所以，目标语为母语的口译所需要的时 间相对少于目标语为外语的口译所需要的时间。当然，口译的类型、内容、场合、对象、风格等因素都会对口译的速度产生影晌，用同一把 尺子来衡量不同类别的口译是不合理的。一般说来，我们可以依据 译员所用的口译时间是否同发言者的讲话时间大体相等来衡量某场 口译是否属于流利。以两倍于来源语发言者的讲话时间进行口译显 然不能被视为流利。

五、口译的过程 The Process of Interpretation

口译前，译员通常需要收集大量与口译主题相关的信息。所收集 到的相关信息可激活储存在译员大脑里长时记忆仓中的相关语言文化 图式。外来语言信号和内部语言文化图式的交流可以帮助译员对所面 对的口译活动作出预测，并引导译员积极理解所感知的信息。这种主 题引领信息解析的过程自上而下，是口译的前期准备乃至口译的传译 活动必不可缺的。

在口译过程中，译员对源源不断的信息进行即时听辨解析。虽然 来源语的语流呈现为线形状，但是译员从语言的音素、词素、词字、词 组、句子、语段、语篇方面的理解既是种自下而上的过程，也是种自

一上而下的过程。译员可以组合小单位语码，进而理解组合后的语句和 语段。但是，对语句或语段的整体理解并非完全建筑在理解所有语言小 单位的基础上，对语言的整体理解有时可以修补所缺省的语言个体符号。

译员在听辨后将所听到的语音储存在感知记忆仓中，同时从长时记忆仓中提取相关的语言信息进行比较、理解和交流。确认后的语言信息可进入短时记忆仓暂存，短时记忆仓将进

译员在解析完来源语信息后，必须将所理解的信息赋予目标语形 式及时输出。译员一边在长时记忆仓中搜寻形式上完整和意义上准确 的目标语语码，一边向掌管语言表达的机动区发出执行目标语表达的 指令。这些步骤环环相扣，几乎同步进行，瞬间完成，不为译员的意识所察觉。简而言之，口译的基本过程由“输入”、“解译”和“输出”构成：

当然在口译实际操作过程中，“接收”、“解码”、“记录”、“编码”和 “表达”这五个阶段并不机械地表现为一种“线性过程”。译员在口译 时，对信息的接收、处理和表达的过程往往是一种“平行过程”：瞬间发 生，瞬间完成。这就是口译的魅力所在。

译员对信息的接收有两种渠道：一种为“听入”，一种为“视入”。听入是口译中最基本、最常见的信息接收形式，是口译的重要环 节。语言信息的听入的质量与译员的听觉能力有关。视入是视译时的 信息接收形式，这种形式在口译中较少见，有时用作听译的辅助手段。当译员听入用母语表达的信息时，除了不熟悉地方口音、怪僻语、俚语、古语、专业词语或发生“耳误”情况外，听入一般不会发生困难。当译员 听入用非本族语所表达的信息时，接收信息将可能构成一道难关，译员 X才外语信息可能会少听入或者未听入，甚至会误听。接收有被动接收 和主动接收两种，被动接收表现为孤立地听入单词和句子，译员的注意 力过分集中在信息的语言形式上。主动接收是指译员在听入时十分注 意信息发出者的神态和语调，注重信息的意义(包括信息的语境意义和 修辞意义)。译员在接收时应该采取主动听入的方法。

解码是指译员对接收到的来源语的信息码进行解意，获取语言和 非语言形式所包含的各种信息。来源语信息码是多方面、多层次的，有 语言码，如语音、句法、词汇等信息，也有非语言码，如文化传统、专业知 识、信息背景、表达风格、神态表情等信息，也有介于两者之间的，如双 关语、话中话、语体意义等信息。由于来源语信息码丰富复杂，既呈线 形排序状，又呈层次交叠状，所以译员对原码的解译处理不可能循序渐 进、逐一解码。对语言信息的立体式加工处理是人脑的物种属性，译员 在解译语言信号的同时会综合辨别和解析各种微妙的非语言信号以及 它们同语言信号之间可能发生的关系。这就是智能翻译机无法取代人 工口译的主要原因之一。有必要指出，译员的感知和解码能力与其储 存在长时记忆中的知识和经验有着密切的关系，尤其是译员的解码能 力，随着知识面的扩大和经验的丰富而增强。

记录，或者叫做暂存，是指将感知到的语码信息暂时储存下来。当 以某一种语码形式出现的信息被感知后，在转换成另一种语码前，须暂 时储存下来。口译的信息记录采用两种形式，一种是以“脑记”为主，一 种是以“笔记”为主。口译记录可以使感知的信息尽可能完整地保存下来，经过转码处理后再完整地传送出去。记录不善往往导致来源语的 信息部分甚至全部丢失。由于口译内容转瞬即逝，良好的记录显得十分重要，它反映了口译职业的独特要求。记录，尤其是“脑记”形式，往 往与解码同步发生。越是简短的信息越便于大脑记录，越是容易解码 的信息越容易记录。短时记忆能力强的译员常以“脑记”代替“笔记”，但对于大段大段的信息，重“脑记”而轻“笔记”是危险的，是靠不住的。无论采用“脑记”还是“笔记”，译员所记录的内容主要是信息的概念、主 题、论点、情节、要点、逻辑关系、数量关系等。对于单位信息量较大的 口译，译员宜采用网状式的整体记忆法，避免点状式的局部记忆法。孤 立的记录不仅效率低，而且没有意义。有意义的记录以有意义的理解 为前提，没有理解的记录会导致误译或漏译。

编码是指将来源语的信息解码后，赋以目标语的表达形式。编码 涉及信息语言的结构调整和词语选配，译员必须排除来源语体系的干 扰，将原码所表达的意义或主旨按目标语的习惯表达形式重新遣词造 句，重新组合排序。经过编码加工后的信息不仅要在语言形式上符合 目标语的表达规范，还应该在内容上保持信息的完整性，在风格上尽可 能保持信息的“原汁原味”。口译的编码技巧与笔译的编码技巧相仿，所不同的是，口译要求快速流利，所以无法像笔译那样有时间斟酌字 眼，处理疑难杂症，追求目标语的“雅致”。

表达是指译员将以目标语编码后的信息通过口头表达的方式传译 出来。表达是口译过程的最后一道环节，是全过程成败的验收站，也是 口译成果的最终表现形式。口译表达的成功标志是准确和流利，只有 准确流利的表达才能在交际双方中间构筑一座顺达的信息桥梁。口译 表达虽无需译员具备伶牙俐齿、口若悬河、能言善辩的演说才能，但口 齿清楚、吐字干脆、音调准确、择词得当、语句通顺、表达流畅却是一名 职业译员必备的条件。

The Categorical Classification of Interpretation 口译类型的划分有三种不同的方法，即“形式分类法”、“方向分类 法”和“任务分类法”三种。

口译按其操作形式可以分为交替口译、接续口译、同声传译、耳语 口译、视阅口译、手语口译等六种：

交替口译(alternating interpretation)交替口译是指译员同时以两种语言为操不同语言的交际双方进行 轮回交替式口译。这种穿梭于双语之间的口译是最常见的一种口译形 式。交替口译的场合很广，可以是一般的非事务性的交谈，可以是正式 的政府首脑会谈，也可以是记者招待会。这种交谈式的传译要求译员 不停地转换语码，在交谈双方或多方之间频繁穿梭，来回传递语段简短 的信息。

接续口译(consecutive interpretation)接续口译，又称连续传译或交传，是一种为演讲者以句子或段落为 单位传递信息的单向口译方式。接续口译用于多种场合，如演讲、祝 词、授课、高级会议、新闻发布会等。演讲者因种种原因需要完整地表 达信息，所以他们往往作连贯发言。这种情况需要译员以一段接一段 的方式，在讲话者的自然停顿间隙，将信息一组接一组地传译给听众。

同声传译(simultaneous interpretation)同声传译，又称同步口译或同传，是译员在不打断讲话者演讲的情 况下，不停顿地将其讲话内容传译给听众的一种口译方式。因为译员 的口译与讲话者的发言几乎同步进行，所以这种口译也被称之为同步 口译。同声传译的最大优点在于效率高，可保证讲话者作连贯发言，不 影响、不中断讲话者的思路，有利于听众对发言全文的通篇理解。同声 传译被认为是最有效率的口译形式，是国际会议最基本的口译手段。同声传译有时也用于学术报告、授课讲座等场合。

耳语口译(whispering interpretation)耳语口译顾名思义是一种将一方的讲话内容用耳语的方式轻轻地

一传译给另一方的口译手段。耳语口译与同声传译一样，属于不停顿的 连贯性口译活动。所不同的是，同声传译的听众往往是群体，如国际会 议的与会者等，而耳语口译的听众则是个人，其对象往往是接见外宾、参加会晤的国家元首或高级政府官员。

视阅口译（sight interpretation)

视阅口译(通常叫做“视译”)是以阅读的方式接收来源语信息、以 口头方式传出信息的口译方式。视译的内容通常是一篇事先准备好的 讲稿或文件。除非情况紧急，或出于暂时保密的缘故，译员一般可以在 临场前几分钟(甚至更长的一段时间)得到讲稿或文件，因而译员可以 将所需口译的文稿快速浏览，做一些必要的文字准备。与同声传译和 耳语口译一样，视阅口译同属不间断的连贯式口译活动。

手语 口译(sign language interpretation)

手语口译，又被称之为“视觉语言口译”（visual language interpretation)，是一种在聋哑人和非聋哑人之间构筑交际桥梁的一种 现场翻译形式，译员必须同时具备有声表达和打手势表达的交流能力。

口译按其传译方向，可呈单向口译，即全程将A语译入B语，或将

B语译入A语;也可呈双向口译，即将A语和B语来回译入和译出： 单向

口译(one-way interpretation)

单向口译是指口译的来源语和目标语固定不变的口译，译员通常 只需将某一种语言口译成另一种语言即可。双向口译（two-way interpretation)

双向口译是指两种不同的语言交替成为口译来源语和目标语的口 译。这两种语言既是来源语，又是目标语，译员在感知、解码、编码、表 达时必须熟练而又快捷地转换语言。

在前面所讲的六种口译形式中，交替口译自然属于双向口译的范 畴；接续口译因场合不同可以表现为单向口译，也可以是双向口译;同 声传译、耳语口译和视阅口译这三种形式通常表现为单向传译;而手语 口译通常需要有声语和手势语同步出现。

口译按其操作内容可以分成导游口译、礼仪口译、宣传口译、会议 口译、会谈口译、特殊口译等类型：

联络口译(liaison-escort interpretation)• 联络口译的工作范围包括联络、接待、陪同、参观、游览、购物等活动。

礼仪口译(ceremony interpretation)

礼仪口译的工作范围包括礼宾迎送、开幕式、闭幕式、招待会、合同签字等活动。宣传口译(information interpretation)宣传口译的工作范围包括国情介绍、政策宣传、机构介绍、广告宣 传、促销展销、授课讲座、文化交流、新闻报道等活动。

会议口译(conference interpretation)

会议口译的工作范围包括国际会议、记者招待会、商务会议、学术 研讨会等活动。

谈判口译(negotiation interpretation)会谈口译的工作范围包括国事会谈、双边会谈、外交谈判、商务谈 判等活动。

特殊口译(special-purpose interpretation)特殊口译，又称“特殊用途口译”，是多民族国家常用的一种目的十分明确的口译，常用以解决一些实际问题，如法庭审判口译、入关手续口译、移民事务口译、族群纠纷口译等。

上述分类旨在说明口译活动的几种不同类型，而在口译实际工作 中，界线分明的口译类别划分往往是不可能的，也是不必要的，因为许 多场合的口译不是单一性的，而是混合性的。所以，一名优秀的译员应该 是兼容性强的通用性译员，是一名能胜任各种类型的口译工作的多面手。

七、口译模式 A Tripartite Model of Interpretation

口译由“译能”、“译技”和“译为”三个相互关联的组成部分构成。译能指的是口译能力，译技指的是口译技巧，译为指的是口译行为。

译能系译员的知识体系、语言能力、心理素质和道德意识的综合。知识体系含语言知识、社会知识、通用知识、专用知识等。语言能力含 语言感知能力、辨析解意能力、转码处理能•力、连贯表达能力等。心理 素质含短时记忆素质、压力承受素质、现场应变素质、虚怀以待素质等。道德意识含忠贞意识、诚信意识、保密意识、服务意识等。

译能在一定程度上是一种天赋才能。几乎懂双语者都可以从事某 种程度的口译，但是绝对做不了高级口译。一名出类拔萃的高级译员 通常天资聪颖，具备常人没有的口译天分。但是口译天分不等于口译 才能，译能的很大一部分不是先天赋予的，而是后天练就的。良好的译 能不可能一蹴而就，而需经历一个逐步形成、渐进完善的过程。译能源 自一分天资、九分努力，虽然“朽木不可雕”，但是“百炼能成钢”。“只要 工夫深，铁杵磨成针”讲的就是这个道理。

译技系译员所掌握的口译技巧体系。译技含语言知识运用的话语 技巧，以及心智能力展现的认知技巧。口译成功与否在很大程度取决 于口译技巧的掌握和运用。口译技巧包括耳听会意技巧、笔头速记技 巧、语言表述技巧、主题借用技巧、论点预测技巧、信息归纳技巧、生词 解意技巧、寓意揣摩技巧、话语转承技巧、语码重组技巧、场景利用技 巧、障碍排除技巧等。

译技获得的主渠道是实践。口译实践需要苦练、实练加巧练，口译 实践是一个“实践——总结——实践——提高”的过程。技巧、技巧，生 而丢技，疏而弃巧。所谓“熟巧”，其道理无非就是“熟能生巧”、“巧能 获技”。

译为系译员的日常口译行为。译为是口译活动的具体实践，是口 译任务的实际操作。译为既是译能的体现，也是译技的展示。译为可 以表现为信息的单向传译，即单一地将A语译成B语，或将B语译成A 语，也可以表现为信息的双向交流，即A语和B语的交替译出或译入。

译为可分为操练性译为和真实性译为两种。操练性译为系编造性 口译行为，是培养译员的主要方法，其难度和量度是可控的，内容是可 知的，甚至是已知的，操作属量体裁衣式，符合“因材施教”的教学原则。

真实性译为是真实场景下的口译行为，属译员的正式口译操作，其难度 和量度是可变的，内容可能是可预测的，也可能变化难测，操作时心理 压力大，译员的注意力更为集中，情绪更为激动，译效持续更为久远。口译培训时，教师若能适时将操作性译为尽可能地转变为真实性译为，则教学效果更为明显。

译能、译技、译为三位一体，构成了口译模式的主要内容,是译质的 综合体现。三者的特点可有如下之表现：译能是口译活动的动力，是口 译译质的核能，是口译信息传递的基础，是口译水准的源泉。译技是口 译活动的手段，是口译译质的协能，是口译信息传递的便道，是口译水 准的保障。译为是口译活动的目的，是口译译质的效能，是口译信息传 递的实现，是口译水准的刻度。

译能、译技、译为互为依存、相互转化。译能更多地存在于译员的 头脑里。译技更多地存在于译员的心智中，译为更多地表现在译员的舌尖上。

译为虽然依赖译能和译技而得以体现，但不一定能如实展现译能。有良好的译能不一定确保每次都有良好的译为，就好比一个有良好体 操能力的运动员不一定每次都有良好的体操表现。译能是静态的、稳 定的，译为是动态的、变化的。译能没有例外，而译为却可表现为失常。译能差，译为一定差，而译能优却不一定保证译为优。译为以译能为基 础，但可以提炼译能。译技是一系列知识运用的技巧，可以通过译为不 断增加数量、提高质量。译技不断提高的过程也是译能不断完善的过 程。一般说来，译为越多，译技越高，译能也就越强。没有译为的译能 可能是停留在书面上的一些口译理论知识，而没有译为的译技则是不 存在的。“熟能生巧”的熟巧关系可以表明译为与译技之间的关系。

八、译员的素质

Interpreter Qualification Requirements 口译是一门专业要求很高的职业。虽然粗通两国语言的人也可以

做一些简单的口译工作，但是他们却无法承担正式的口译任务。要成 为一名优秀的译员，除了一些必要的生理条件和心理条件之外，通常需 要经过专门学习和强化培训，培养和提炼职业译员所必须具有的素质。——名专职译员应具备哪些基本条件呢？

译员必须具有良好的职业道德和爱国主义情操。译员的活动属外事活动，译员的一举一动、一言一行都关系到祖国的形象、民族的 风貌、机构.的利益。译员在口译工作以及与口译工作有关的活动中，应遵守外事纪律和财经纪律，严守国家机密，严格按口译工作的操作 程序办事。译员必须忠于职守，对交谈双方负责。严守服务对象的 机密。译员要洁身自爱，不谋私利，不自行其是，不做有损国格和人 格的事。

译员必须有扎实的两种或两种以上语言的语言功底。译员的双语 能力不仅指通晓基本语言知识，如对语音语调、句法结构、词法语义等 知识的掌握，更重要的是指运用语言知识的能力（如听、说、读、写、译）。此外，译员还应该了解各种文体或语体风格和语用功能，掌握一定数量 的习语、俚语、术语、谚语、委婉语、略语、诗句等词语的翻译方法。

译员必须具备清晰、流畅、达意的表达能力。在做口译时，要做到 语速不急不缓、音调不高不低、吐字清晰自然、表达干净利落、择词准确 恰当、语句简明易解、译文传神传情。译员必须有一个敏捷、聪颖的头脑，具备良好的心脑记忆能力、逻 辑思维能力、辨析解意能力和应变反应能力。

译员必须有广博的知识，对时事要闻、政经知识、人文知识、科技知 识、商贸知识、法律知识、史地知识、国际知识、民俗知识、生活常识等 等，都要略窥门径。

译员必须有高尚、忠诚、稳重、谦虚的品格和大方素雅、洁净得体的 仪表。译员必须讲究外事礼仪、社交礼节和口译规范。译员在口译工 作时，要忠实翻译，做到不插话、不抢译、不随意增减原文内容；要把握 角色，不可喧宾夺主、炫耀学识。.译员要随时检点自己的服饰和仪容，戒除不拘小节、不修边幅的习惯。总之，一名称职的译员应该是一个仪

九、口译培训 Interpreter Training表端庄、举止大方、态度和蔼、风度儒雅、言谈得体的外交家。

同任何科目的教学相似，口译培训的三大要素是教师、教材、教法。三大要素中教师是关键,教材是手段，教法是保障。

口译课教师应该具备两个基本条件，一是具有语言教学和翻译教学 经验的双语教师，二是具有丰富口译经验的职业译员或具有一定经验的 兼职译员或业余译员。经常承担各类口译任务的高校外语教师是理想的 口译课人选。口译课教师首先必须具有语言教学经验和翻译教学经验，这是因为口译教学涉及教学人员的教学理念、教学原则以及语言教学和 翻译教学的方法。一个语言教学和翻译教学的外行难以成为口译教学的 内行。其次，口译教师还必须具有口译工作的经验，这是因为口译工作属 职业性和经验性很强的行业，有其特定的行业规范和操作方法。由于没 有口译实践经验的外语教师难以在口译教学中进行内行的点拨和讲解，难以组织内行的有效训练，因而难以胜任较高层次的口译教学。

有人说，一个好的教师无需好的教材便能上好课，这是不符合教学事 实的，也是不负责任的做法。好教师无好教材能够上课，甚至能一时上好 课，但不能长久地上好课。教材是达到教学目的之不可缺的手段。好教材 是好教师课的“炊之米”。对口译培训来说，拥有优秀的教材尤为重要。

口译培训教材有两类，一类为时事性的政务类和商务类讲话，另一 类为系统性的专业培训教材。时事讲话具有很强的现时性和现场性，从而保证了口译培训的真实性。时事讲话通常用作同声传译的培训教 材。但是时事讲话有其自身的缺点，即缺乏教学的系统性和针对性。系统教材克服了上述时事讲话的缺点，教材通常按培训对象的现有水平、口译教学的阶段目的、口译题材的难易程度、口译技能的训练项目 等要求而系统编写，是综合培训口译能力的常用教材。系统口译教材 除了具备一般教材的特点之外，还应该体现口译的特点，例如语言经 典、题材广泛、情景真实、内容实用、词语通用、语言规范、技巧科学、操

作容易、手段多样等。总之口译教材应该具有时代性、经典性、科学性、综合性、实用性、立体性、参阅性等特点。

口译教学有了优秀的师资和良好的教材，还需要一套科学的教学 方法来实施口译教学的阶段性教学计划，达到终极性教学目标，即制订 和实施短期目标与长期目标的计划和方法。国内高校对口译教学方法 的研究目前尚处起步阶段，至今还未见一套以科学的口译教学理念为 指导的较完整的教学法面世。国外的口译模式及口译教学理论如

Seleskovitch的“释意理论”、Gile的“认知负荷模型”和Anderson的

“认知能力发展模式”对我国口译理论研究产生了较积极的影响，这种 影响应该对我国口译gt学方法的研究和我国高校口译教学方法标准的 制订与实施起到积极的推动作用。

口译教学可以采用综合教学法，即基础能力培训和应用能力培训 相结合，听、说、读、写、译技能教学兼容,文字、声像、多媒体教学手段并 用。口译活动涉及耳听会意、话语理解、信息加工、文本翻译、笔头记 录、口头表述等能力，因而口译教学旨在培养牢固掌握两种语言知识、熟练运用语用技能、精于语言翻译技巧、擅长标准口译操作的人才，旨 在在培养语言通才的基础上培养口译专才。在口译教学中，无论选择 何种教学方法都应该明确，培养语言通才是培养口译专才的必然阶段，培养口译专才是培养语言通才的最终阶段。

虽然“眼前道路千万条，条条道路通罗马，，但是道路有曲有直，行 速有快有慢，车技有高有低，效果也会有好有差。—口译教学可以以综合 教学法为主，以专项教学法为辅，以课堂教学为培训主体，以现场实践 为职业体验，精讲泛练，点面结合，文本音像，立体教学。起点已清楚，目 标亦明确，手段可定局，这就是教学方法的重要性。

十、口译研究

口译属于翻译的一种形式，究其实质，口译理论研究系翻译理论研

究的一个分支，属经验性研究。但是，如前所述，口译有其自身的操作 特点和职业要求，这就决定了口译理论研究不能完全等同于笔译理论 研究。口译研究既不能完全依赖自然科学研究通行的量化归纳分析方 法，也不能纯粹凭借人文学科研究喜用的内省演绎分析方法，应该采取 两者兼收并蓄、互为补充的综合方法。

口译理论研究含一般口译研究、特殊口译研究和应用口译研究三 大类。

一般口译研究主要包括对口译的性质、过程、标准等根本问题的研 究。其中，口译性质研究主要指对口译的定义、口译与笔译的关系、口 译的目的、口译的类型、口译的社会功能等问题的研究。口译过程研究 主要指对口译发生过程中译员处理信息的方法及程序的研究，也包括 对此过程中译员的生理特点、心理特点及认知特点等问题的研究。口 译标准研究主要指对口译操作质量的一般标准、不同口译任务的评估 标准、口译教学质量的评估标准、口译评估的模式及操作等问题的研 究。此外，一般口译研究还应包括对译员的专业素质、工作条件、工作 方式、口译价值与价格等问题的研究，以及对口译发展史和口译教学史 的研究。

特殊口译研究主要包括对两种具体语言的对比与互译研究、对两 种文化的对比研究，提出能指导在两种具体语言之间进行互译的理论。在这方面，口译研究可借鉴翻译研究的成果。一般口译研究和特殊口 译研究都属于口译基础理论研究。

应用口译研究则主要包括对口译技巧及口译教学与培训的研究。口译技巧研究包括对口译的基本技巧的一般研究和对不同口译所涉及 的特殊技巧的研究。接续口译和同声传译是最重要的两种口译形式，口译界有关这两种口译技巧的研究也是最多的。口译教学与培训研究 主要指对口译教学的原则与方法、培养目标、教学内容、教资力量、教学 设备、学员素质要求以及学前水平测试等问题的研究，同时还包括对口 译教学实践的每个具体环节的研究，如对口译课程设置、.口译教材选 编、口译技能教学、口译教学评估等方面的研究，以及对口译测试和口 译资格认证等问题的研究。

国际口译理论界在学术研究方面有三大奠基学派，即以Kade为代表的“德国派”、以Chernov为代表的“俄国派”以及以Seleskovitch为 代表的“法国巴黎派”。此外，国际口译理论界提出了诸多口译信息处 理模式，现把其中最具影响力的人物以及他们所提出的理论或模式列 举如下：

Herbert： 1952 年提出的 Understanding-Conversion-Delivery Theory。

Seleskovitch ： 1962 年提出的 Sense-Fused，Triangular-Meaning-Process Theory。

Gerver： 1971 年提出的 Mental-Structure-and-Procedure Theory。

Moser-Mercer： 1978 年提出的 PsychoProcess，Memory Structure Theory。

Chernov： 1978 年/202_ 年提出的 Theme/Rhyme，Probability Prediction Theory Q

Lederer： 1981 年提出的 Mental Operation Theory。

Cokely： 1992 年提出的 Socio-Cultural-Psychological Theory。

Paradis： 1994 年提出的 Multiple Parallel Information Processing Theory。

Setton： 1999 年提出的 Cognitive-Pragmatic Representation Theory。

我国口译教学与研究领域里的学者所进行的口译理论研究基本上 是对西方口译理论的批判、继承和扩展，尤其是对其中最有影响的三大 理论的评议和扩充：Seleskovitch提出的释意理论(Theorie du Sens)、Gile提出的认知负荷模型(The Effort Models)以及Anderson提出的认知能力发展模式(Adaptive Control of Thoughts，又称ACT理论）。

“释意理论”的最大特点是对译员的思维过程进行了详细描述，提 出三角形翻译过程的假设，认为翻译的对象应该是源语信息的意义(sens)，而不是其语言外壳，意义是语言同认知知识结合的结果。释意 理论研究人员同心理语言学家合作，试图从研究信息意义的记忆角度 来解释口译过程中语言的信息与语言的外壳之间的关系。释意理论涉

及的许多问题还有待深入研究和论证。首先，释意理论提出了译员的智力机制问题，但就如何以实证的方法证明“脱离源语语言外壳”这一 阶段的存在，并且说明信息脱离语言外壳后以何种形式存在这一问题 上未能实现突破，因而未解开口译员如何进行“翻译”的心智加工这一 谜团;其次，释意理论提出了 口译员思维理解过程中的“意义单位”的概 念，认为意单位不可定量分析，只可定性分析，但未能就如何确定“意 义单位”这一问题作出深入解释。

“认知负荷模型理论”以认知科学为理论基础，借用了“有限注意力 资源”和“任务困难程度与任务实施时限强关联性”两个主要的认知概 念，重在描述口译(尤其是同声传译)中译员如何分配精力（effort)处理 听、理解、记忆、产出等几乎同时发生的任务，并根据口译工作过程的阶 段性特点提出了“同传的口译模型”、“交传的口译模型”和“口译的理解 模型”。认知负荷模型是关于口译操作制约的模型，其优势在于它有很 强的可操作性，并且对分析口译过程中的错译和漏译现象具有较强的 说服力。

“认知能力发展模式理论”认为，任何熟练的行为都要求将陈述性 知识(declarative knowledge)转化为程序性知识(procedural knowledge)。由陈述性知识到程序性知识有个发展过程：认知、联想 和自主阶段。在认知阶段只有陈述性知识，陈述性知识以解释的方式 提取，速度很慢；在联想阶段，既有陈述性知识也有程序性知识，但提取 速度仍不够快。自主阶段的知识完全程序化了，其提取速度极快。认 知技能发展模式能较好地解释认知能力的习得，并且可以从人类各种 认知技能的习得过程中找到例证，尤其是口译技能的习得过程。

目前我国口译理论研究主要有两大特征：第一，口译理论研究呈现 出跨学科、全方位、多视角的特点。具体表现在：（1)口译过程研究由 描述口译阶段、过程的层面逐渐深入到研究译员思维活动过程的规律；(2)口译标准研究由关于一般原则的比较抽象概括的经验总结上升为 有理论指导的客观、量化的研究;（3)口译研究由研究操作性技巧深入 到研究译员的认知模型和整体译能。第二，我国的口译研究正在由纯 技能的单学科研究转向理论与实证相结合的跨学科研究，这为我国口

译研究工作者和教学人员提出了新的课题和挑战，要求我们以新思维 和新视野，运用篇章语言学、心理语言学、神经语言学、认知科学、跨文 化交际学、语料库语言学等相关学科的知识，建立种既基于我国口译 现实，也符合国际口译标准，伺时又具有很强的描述性和解释性的先进 的口译理论。

我国口译研究与译员培训正处于蓬勃发展阶段，需要及时了解国 际信息，需要借鉴国际经验。对有志从事口译理论研究和口译教学研 究的人员，对有意接受专业培训的学生，我们在“第一部分”结束之际提 供一些国外翻译组织、翻译协会和培训机构的网址，仅供参考。
